Ceiling Fan Size Guide: Sweep Size & Running Cost
What sweep size actually fits your room, how many fans a large hall needs, what CMM airflow means, and how much a BLDC fan really saves versus a standard induction fan — with a calculator so you don't have to guess.

General buying guidance reconciled from multiple fan-sizing charts — treat it as a starting point, not an exact engineering spec. We currently stock 1200mm (48") BLDC fans only.
Sweep size by room area
| Room size | Recommended sweep |
|---|---|
| Up to 55 sq ft (small bedroom, store room) | 600 mm (24") |
| 55 – 100 sq ft (bedroom, study) | 900 mm (36") |
| 100 – 175 sq ft (most bedrooms, living rooms) | 1200 mm (48") — what we stock |
| 175 – 250 sq ft (large living room, hall) | 1400 mm (56") or 2× 1200mm |
| 250+ sq ft (large hall) | 1500 mm+ or multiple fans |
These bands are reconciled from multiple published fan-sizing guides — a general planning reference, not an exact engineering spec.
What CMM and BEE star rating mean
CMM (cubic metres per minute) measures how much air a fan actually moves — this is the number that matters for cooling, not just sweep size. BEE star rating measures service value: CMM delivered per watt consumed. Our BLDC fans deliver 220 CMM airflow at 28–36W, in the same airflow class as a standard fan running at 75W+.
BLDC vs standard fan — running cost
Based on 10 hours/day use at ₹8/unit (typical Indian residential rate) — see the LED guide's running cost calculator to recompute for your own usage and tariff.
| Fan type | Power | Annual cost* | Savings vs standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old standard fan | 75 W | ₹2,190 / yr | — |
| Unihox BLDC 28W | 28 W | ₹818 / yr | 63% |
| Unihox BLDC 36W (large room) | 36 W | ₹1,051 / yr | 48% |

Frequently asked questions
What ceiling fan size do I need for my room?
As a general guide: up to 55 sq ft needs a 600mm fan, 55–100 sq ft needs 900mm, 100–175 sq ft (most bedrooms and living rooms) needs 1200mm, 175–250 sq ft needs 1400mm or two 1200mm fans, and anything larger needs 1500mm+ or multiple fans. Use the calculator above for your exact room.
How many fans do I need for a large hall?
As a rough rule, one 1200mm fan comfortably covers about 200 sq ft. For a larger hall, space multiple 1200mm fans evenly rather than hunting for one oversized fan — it cools more evenly and is easier to source.
How much does a BLDC fan actually save on electricity?
A 75W standard induction fan costs about ₹2,190/year to run (10 hrs/day at ₹8/unit). Our 28W BLDC fan costs about ₹818/year for the same usage — a 63% saving. The 36W large-room variant costs about ₹1,051/year — a 48% saving.
What does CMM mean on a fan spec sheet?
CMM (cubic metres per minute) is the volume of air the fan moves — the official Indian (BEE) measure of airflow/air delivery. Our BLDC fans deliver 220 CMM, in the same airflow class as a standard 5-star fan, at a fraction of the wattage.
What is the BEE star rating and why does it matter?
BEE star rating measures service value — airflow (CMM) delivered per watt consumed. Higher stars mean more air for less electricity. BLDC motors achieve 5-star-class efficiency because they avoid the energy losses of a traditional induction motor and capacitor.
Can a BLDC fan run on an inverter or during power cuts?
Yes. Our BLDC fans run on a 100–300V wide input range and low wattage, so they're well suited to inverter/UPS backup — they draw far less power than a standard fan for the same airflow, extending your backup runtime.
